North Walsham Heritage Action Zone: Honouring the Past, Shaping a Sustainable Future.

The £4 million North Walsham Heritage Action Zone regeneration has successfully revitalised the historic market town, delivering enhanced public realm, improved accessibility and vibrant community spaces. Led by Influence for North Norfolk District Council as part of Historic England’s national High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme, the project combined physical improvements with community-led placemaking initiatives to celebrate local heritage and support long-term regeneration.

At the heart of the scheme, The Shambles has been transformed into a distinctive, pollinator-friendly garden inspired by the site’s historic plot patterns, featuring accessible routes, integrated seating and wildlife-friendly planting. Enhancements to Market Place and surrounding streets have created safer, more attractive pedestrian spaces, strengthening connectivity, increasing footfall and supporting local businesses.

Rooted in North Walsham’s rich medieval heritage, the project carefully balanced the preservation of historic character with the needs of a modern town centre. The completed scheme has created a vibrant, inclusive and economically resilient destination that celebrates its past while supporting a sustainable and prosperous future for residents, businesses and visitors.
