Chesterfield Canal Restoration, Staveley: From Fragmented Corridor to Thriving Green Infrastructure
The Chesterfield Canal restoration at Staveley is a major heritage-led landscape project, funded by the Staveley Town Deal and led by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. The scheme reconnects and revitalises a historic section of canal through the reconstruction of the channel, installation of a new lock, bridges and towpaths, and restoration of Bellhouse Basin. Alongside significant civil engineering works, the project places strong emphasis on landscape quality, biodiversity and public access.
A comprehensive landscape masterplan integrates native planting, wildflower meadows and aquatic habitats to enhance ecological value while creating an attractive, accessible destination. New seating areas, viewing points, interpretation and improved wayfinding connect the canal to surrounding routes, including the Trans Pennine Trail.
The restoration transforms a previously fragmented corridor into a multifunctional green infrastructure asset, supporting recreation, wildlife and community use, while contributing to local regeneration, tourism and long-term environmental resilience.
